The Local Area...

With the delights of the English Lake District, Eden Valley and Hadrian's Wall on your doorstep, you will never be short of things to do when staying at Coach House Holiday Cottages.

For walkers, cyclists or motorists the Lake District offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the World. With fells such as Skiddaw and Blencathra to climb and lakes such as Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite for dinghy sailing and windsurfing, there is no shortage of fun for the adventurous.

If you prefer a more relaxed pace, the north Lakeland towns and villages provide countless places to explore and you will never be far away from places to eat and drink. The market towns of Keswick and Penrith are only 20 minutes away and the city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House Museum, a similar distance.

Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site, is also within striking distance of us, together with the recent Hadrian's Wall National Trail which runs the full length of the wall from west to east coast.

Locally, the picturesque villages of Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket are only a short drive away. Caldbeck (8 miles) is well known for its flowers and its former industrial heritage, now long gone. The Hesket Newmarket Brewery is well known for it award winning real ales.

Mealsgate is ideally located for exploring the lesser known Northern Fells of the English Lake District. Take in the breathtaking views of the Caldbeck Fells and walk for miles without seeing a soul. Perfect for relaxing and getting away from it all. The surrounding fells and woodlands are easily accessible on foot and there are many signed footpaths.

And should the weather turn wet, make use of our local knowledge about such visitor attractions as Rheged and the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. There is also Keswick Spa & Pool, Trotters World of Animals, Mire House and Dodd Wood Forestry Trails all within striking distance of Coach House Cottages. See the Cumbria Tourist Board website for more information.

Mealsgate really is an ideal base for exploring many parts of the North West of England and the Scottish Borders.
